Budgets and Diets don’t work.
This month’s 2 Minute Financial Focus is on why diets and budgets don’t work.
We’ve all had the crash diet that was going to change our waist line, or that New Year’s resolution that was going to change our financial situation, right? How does it usually end up working out?
That’s right, diets and budgets just don’t work for most of us.
I think it’s because of the way we think about it. If you are thinking that you are going to cut shopping completely from your budget, it makes you want to shop even more. I know when I say I’m cutting Krispy Kreme from my diet, and I see that the Hot Light is on, my willpower starts to drop!
What if we gave ourselves permission to cheat on our diets and budgets? What if when we had an extra donut we went to the gym an extra day that week, or went an extra mile on the treadmill.
What if we gave ourselves permission to go shopping, and if we spent $100 or $200, we also had to put that same amount into our savings account? That would help you feed that desire to go shopping, and it would help you save for the future. In turn, it creates more financial freedom for yourself.
You could even use a coupon and take the amount of money you saved, and put that money into your savings account. Another great idea is to check eBay or any number of other online shopping apps to see if you could save even more money. Be creative on the ways you can save money and put additional money into your savings. I hope you’ve enjoyed this 2 Minute Financial Focus.
